You Are Invited
You are invited to stay for an hour after church this Sunday, August 11th, for the presentation of a documentary film produced by the Anglican Church of Canada.
The name of the documentary is Doctrine of Discovery: Stolen Lands, Strong Hearts. This is a film about a devastating decision, made over 500 years ago, which continues to profoundly impact Indigenous and Settler people worldwide. Pope Alexander VI ruled that the lands being discovered by European explorers at the time was “empty” land and its millions of Indigenous inhabitants were “non-human”.
This film is one of the responses of the Anglican Church’s Primate’s Commission on Discovery, Reconciliation and Justice. The purpose of this film is to respond to the calls to action by helping to provide education and insight into the racist foundations of many of our property and other laws still in existence to this day.
Dr. Richard Vedan, a parishioner at All Saints, will introduce the film for us. He has been a volunteer ambassador with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and has extended family roots in the coast Salish territory.
He is Professor Emeritus UBC Social Work and a past Director of the UBC First Nations House of Learning and Senior Advisor to the UBC President on Aboriginal Affairs.
Dr. Vedan’s clinical practice, doctoral studies and research for many decades has addressed inter generational trauma locally regionally, nationwide and internationally.
